Done Her Best

Last April 2, 2011 was Yanni’s Recognition Day. She garnered the 3rd Honorable mention ( I’m still confused with the names of academic honors like 3rd honors and stuff ) not just in the class but for the entire grade 2 level. As you may know, this is Yanni’s first time to attend regular/traditional school. She has been homeschooled since she was 6 years old. She learned to read and write with me that includes her basic mathematical skills (Hubby is in charged of teaching their values class and PE). Given the choice, I would love to homeschool Yanni until highschool. But since I need to go back to work (After 5 years of staying home, but hey I got an online job on the side)--- make use of my profession as a teacher (honestly speaking, Life is hard nowadays, couples need to work hand in hand to raise a family and give kids a better future--- but hey that is not what this blog is all about)… But anyway… we never pressure Yanni to excel— like a never-ending yapping about “you have to have an accolade in school” or “I want you to be the first”… or anything of that sort of nagging and pressuring…No we do not do that to our kids… We have other way of telling it… LOL.

Seriously, we just tell the kids to do their best…and we encourage them by sharing that Mama and Dada used to get awards too while we’re studying… We also give extrinsic rewards to our kids, like treat them whenever they get perfect score or whenever they have done their best… In our family, we define best as having done their task at their utmost inherent abilities and or maximum potentialsBest to us is not being on top of others…but squeezing the last drop of what they are capable of doing. I don’t know if that makes sense…but that’s how it is in our family. We always rejoice whenever our kids achieve something, even the simplest tasks.

All Praise and Glory belong to God for the good things that Yanni did in her school. We know with or without the award, she has done her best…She pulled through the school year despite the odd transition from homeschool to traditional (public) school (well, talk about adjustments and stress... and her being different from most kids in her class- so blessed that she has done quite a great job back there. God is good, right!).

N.B... a due recognition is credited to my husband who never grows tired of doing bible study with our kids, and is encouraging them to live life for God!
